On the Greens with Jean Davis

Scores were a little firmer this weekend for the Craftlatt Permaluxe Lattice Day on Saturday. The addition of filterpress to half the course brought about some sad stories of hitting the odd lump and stopping the shot of the century from happening but many players didn’t notice it at all. I’ve heard all the hard luck stories here.

John Hollands overcame all obstacles to have a sweet 67 nett so it really shows that the more you practice the more good luck you get and your game improves. Lee Trevino says that too.

Les Killer was just one stroke behind and was lucky to be runner-up in first division from a group of 68 netts.

67 was the popular score in second division as well and the best of them on a countback was Peter Skyring with Damien Faithfull his runner-up.

Kayne Aslett was just 20cms off his eagle on the 13th – so disappointing Kayne.

Leading ladies on 71 were not in the first division. Rae Canniffe was not happy at taking out the second division with the new handicapping system working against her but now for that good score she will find herself back where she came from earlier in the week. Audrey Neill and Val Earney also had that score to lose on the countback.

Congratulations to members Peter and Carol Gaul who won the regional finals of the mixed fourball at Hervey Bay last weekend and will be off to the State finals at Pelican Waters soon. Mark Wooldridge and Trevor McLeod were one off the top men’s fourball score but only the best pair go on to the finals.

Legacy Charity Day has a great array of trophies lined up for this Saturday so mark it as a must play day and book your place on the timesheet now.

Ladies Open Carnival is Sunday 12th September and closing day for nominations is this Sunday so get your name on the nomination sheet at your club and enjoy our open day with the course in great condition and not nearly as tough as Bribie Island.

Men will be out of town at the Maryborough Open Day so you need to nominate as well at your club now.

Veterans

Des Jackson was the winner on 24th with 44 points. Scoring was very good, playing the front nine twice while the back nine was fertilised. Runner up with 43 was Grant MacDonald. Consolations B Druitt 42, P Warren, R Baldwin, R Rowe 41; W Davis 40; Curtin, B Smith 39; F Henke, M Newman 38; V Muller, B Foy, D Hay, L Dyball 37; M Price, LO'Shanesy, J Hollands, P Skyring, C Sanders, C McArthur, H Akacich, J Davis E Martin 36.

Pros Pin Men No. 2. D Jackson 1.35, G MacDonald 3.10, B Druitt 5.44, R Glowacki 5.50, C Sanders 6.37. Club Pin No. 8. B Blackburn 4.15, D Foster 11.05.

Pro Ladies Approach No. 4. J Davis .94, M Newman 1.42. Club Approach No. 8. B Smith .70, J Davis .99.
The remarkable point with the pin and approach shots was though the same holes were played twice, no player was successful twice.

Today Veterans not on tour will play a stableford with L Killer and R Rowe on Field and B Druitt and J Curtin on Cards.

Twenty-nine juniors played for the August Monthly Medals on Saturday with close results in all Divisions. Richael Paige had the round of the day in winning Division 4 with a nett 7 from Aaron Silcox on nett 10. Richael's nett 7 was nine shots under her handicap. Well done Richael.

Slow Play No round of golf should take longer than 4 hours 15 minutes to complete. If you feel this pace is too fast, it is recommended you golf at a time when play is not so heavy. To reduce this problem some golfers will have to move faster than they have in the past, to ensure everyone has an enjoyable round of golf. Slow play is not caused by long rough, tricky greens or a bad slice. These are the challenges that give golf its appeal. Rather, slow play is the result of bad habits that waste time and impose a slower round on everyone.

Some Time Saver Hints:

1. Always be ready to hit
-proceed directly to your own ball
-take a practice swing and get set while others are hitting
-hit when ready, even simultaneously if you will not interfere with others
-carry a spare ball with you; if in doubt...hit a provisional
-know the rules of golf, especially those pertaining to out of bounds, water hazards and lost balls

2. Don't Waste Time
- never record your scores on or near the green
- don't leave your cart or bag in front of the green.
- give instructions on the driving range, not on the course
- carry an extra ball, tees and ball marker in your pocket
- play your shot once a group is realistically out of range
- if a ball is lost, play your shot BEFORE helping search
- lost ball, 5 minutes per group per hole, maximum time

3. On The Tee
- the first player ready to hit should
- other players should wait right next to the tee markers
- after hitting, be ready to proceed to your ball

4. On The Green
- park your cart and clubs in line with the next tee
- line up your putt before it is your turn
- follow the continuous putting rules until holed out, unless restricted by another player's line
