If one hopes to be among the leading goalscorers it would help if you were named Ryan (boys) and Emily or Mikaela (girls). Six different boys named Ryan scored goals, while Emily and Mikaela each provided three.

69 different girls scored goals while the boys had 76.

The boys scored 203 goals (including 4 own goals) the girls 134 (1).

For the boys, Met East, Met North and Darling Downs each had 9 different goal scorers while the Wide Bay girls had ten.

The Met East girls were the only team to go through the Championships without conceding a goal.

On day three in the girls competition, fourteen games were played with 4 games drawn 0-0, the winning sides scored a total of 16 goals without conceding a goal.

At least 2 girls, Taylah Schutt (South West) and Kaylah Brackin (Darling Downs) celebrated their eleventh birthday in Bundaberg.

After being runners-up in 2006 and finishing joint-second last year, Metropolitan East claimed the Queensland School Sports 12 years and under Girls State Football Championships crown with a last-round 1-0 victory over Wide Bay yesterday. Met East had trailed the Bay by two points heading into the day, but they had a game in hand over them, and they did exactly what was required, taking the lead with a 1-0 win over Northern to start their day, then repeating the dose against the host region, with co-captain Gemma Owens the biggest hero by scoring the goals in both of their games.

Coach Ann-Louise Edwards and Team Manager Norm McNamara were both delighted with the result. “We got the goal midway through the first half against Northern and straight after half-time against Wide Bay, but they were both very hard games,’’ McNamara said. He lauded Owens for a “super carnival’’, in which she finished with five goals and led superbly from the front with fellow co-captain Kate Archibald. “Kate was outstanding all week in the midfield, and today when we got the goal against Wide Bay, she dropped back in defence. She just ran and ran and ran for five days and she picked herself up all day and showed what she could do,’’ McNamara said.

“Sweeper Nadine Magee had an outstanding carnival as well – they were our three exceptional players. “We had five girls who were there last year, including Gemma and Kate, and their experience showed - overall the girls played with guts and determination all week, and they thoroughly deserved to finish where they did. “We finished the carnival as it started with our sixth 1-0 win after three 1-0 wins on day one.’’ Overall Met East claimed nine wins and two draws from 11 matches, but while their goal haul was nothing special with 18, their defence was the key to many of their wins as they did not concede a goal, with keeper Makenzie Eddington also very good. Owens, Archibald and Magee were their only players to be named in the Queensland team, with Met West and Sunshine Coast equally best represented with three players each. South Coast had two players chosen, with Lexi Core, of Hervey Bay, the only Wide Bay player to be picked, while Capricornia and Darling Downs each also had one girl included.

It was Wide Bay’s only loss of the carnival and despite being bridesmaids for the second year in a row, Coach Paul Ash was “extremely proud’’ of his side and happy to receive the Runners-up Shield after accumulating 35 points, five fewer than Met East. “I couldn’t have asked for anything more in that last game - Met East got a through-ball for a one-on-one with the keeper and they finished it off – it was the only shot they had all game,’’ Ash said. “We probably had three or four shots but none that really troubled the keeper but I was extremely happy and the girls were happy with what they had achieved already in the carnival, whether we won, drew or lost. “Lexi and Ella Flack, who was named as a shadow Queensland player, were our two real stand-outs but Jaymee Gay was also very solid for us at the back, and the rest were very, very good.’’

Although he would have liked to have more players chosen in the state team, Ash admitted having just one recognised was “a fair reflection’’. “We did not have a lot of stand-out individual players but the girls gelled together as a team, and sometimes it happens that you can be a good team but haven’t got that individual flair that they are looking for,’’ he said. Ash said three of his team would still be eligible for next year’s championships – three of the Bundaberg contingent, Maddie Rejtano, Morgan Reimer and Emily Drinovac - and he is hopeful that one or more of them can go on to emulate Core’s feats this year after she also contested the 2007 championships. “Lexi went away with me last year and the experience is so beneficial in making it to the next stage – having two years at it makes you aware of what is really needed,’’ he said.

South Coast wound up third on 34 points after defeating Peninsula 4-2 with Ellie Papalexiou featuring with a double. Capricornia also made it a double for the day, outgunning North West 3-0 and pipping Met North 1-0 to also take fourth position on 31 points. After doing it tough for most of the week, South West and North West each saved their best for last, both ending with honourable scoreless draws against Darling Downs and Northern respectively. South West were however part of one title win – in the Power v Spirit Trophy – as one of the group which also includes Met East, South Coast, Capricornia, Darling Downs and Northern, and which gained the most points from “acknowledged Derby games’’ against the other six regions.

The stage is set for an epic last-round clash between Wide Bay and Metropolitan East at Martens Oval today, with the game to decide the winner of the Queensland School Sport 12 years and under Girls State Football Championships. Yesterday, Wide Bay retained a two-point lead on the ladder over Met East, sharing the points in a 1-1 draw with South Coast and downing Peninsula 2-0, and with Met East outgunning South West 4-0 but being held to a scoreless draw against Capricornia. Met East have a game in hand over the host region, but regardless of the result of their first-up clash with Northern, they and the Bay will go into their duel later in the morning with a maximum of two points separating the pair, although their positions going into the game will decide their respective tactics, with four points on offer for a win, two for a draw and one for a loss.

South Coast are in third position on 30 points, followed by Met West 27 and Sunshine Coast 26, but with each of those sides having just one match left, they cannot catch the leaders, and the quest for the silverware is a race in two. Wide Bay coach Paul Ash was again “very pleased’’ with their performances yesterday. “All played very well - we got the first in the first half (through Mary-Catherine Aylward) against South Coast but they scored five minutes into the second half – neither side really had the chance to win it after that – it was a very hard lot of contests in the midfield by both teams and it was a very fair result in a very competitive good game,’’ Ash said. “Against Peninsula, we scored both our goals in the first half but we dominated the whole game and really could have scored another five or six, easy, and they didn’t have a shot on goal, and I was very happy with that.’’ Ash said midfielders Lauren Bentley and Emily Drinovac had two strong games and that Ella Flack and Lexie Core both also “did well again’’, including scoring the goals against Peninsula. Ash declared that all his players are “keen and rearing to go’’ for their date with destiny at 10.50am. “It comes down to grand final pretty much - who wins wins the championship and the girls are very excited, but I will be happy whether we lose, draw or win – they have already certainly exceeded expectations,’’ he said.

Met East Manager Norm McNamara said it was business as usual against South West, but that they were a “little bit disappointed’’ with their scoreless draw against Capricornia. “It was pretty similar to (Tuesday) (against Met West) - we battled away and had our chances but they didn’t come off - Capricornia really muscled up and played hard football and knocked a few of our younger players off their games early, and they did not realise ’til half-time that they could do the same,’’ McNamara said. McNamara said Jessica Burns and Delenn Palmer did well in their first game of the morning to each get on the scoreboard with their first goals. “Also Alice Langholt has been consistent all day, and Sabrina Heggie did very well at the back today,’’ he said. McNamara does not believe that having to play two games today to the Bay’s one will have any effect on the outcome. “We have got 14 fit players and they games are a couple of hours apart, so there is time to recover, and away we go,’’ he said. “But it will be a very tough day - if we win against Northern, it will make it a lot easier against Wide Bay, but whatever way, they will be out to beat us and we will be out to give them a touch-up too.’’

It was also a good day for Darling Downs yesterday, winning their two matches to join Capricornia and Met North in sixth place. Jemima Russell scored one goal each in defeating Sunshine Coast 3-0 and Met West 2-0, and their coach Mark Burchardt, who was formerly one of Bundaberg’s top players, was very satisfied with their efforts against what he described as “two pretty good teams’’. “On the first day, we dropped a couple of games that maybe we could have won, but with overall four wins, five losses and one draw, I’m pretty happy,’’ Burchardt said. “We played Met North (on Tuesday) and lost only 1-0 but they got a penalty and we had a one-on-one on the keeper but they saved it. “Today we played well – we are starting to click and gel and stepping up in intensity to a much higher standard, and to have five goals for today and none against, against quality teams is very good – they got very tired but kept putting in.’’

Burchardt said Katie Orange had been a “stand-out at the back’’. “Katie is strong, quick and very good – also Amber Jennings up front has scored about five goals and has really caused a lot of head-aches,’’ he said. “Carly Cooper, on the wing, has done quite well too – she’s an 11-year-old putting her body on the line against 12-year-olds getting past her – but the whole team has done really well.’’ Burchardt is also very much looking forward to their last match today, which he labelled as a “derby game’’ against his region of the past few years, South West. Another impressive performer yesterday was Analiese Stitt, who chalked up three goals to hand Met North a 3-0 win over South West.

Host region Wide Bay moved to the top of the Queensland School Sport 12 years and under Girls State Championships table by maintaining their undefeated record with two wins and a draw yesterday. They now have 28 points to their credit with six wins and two draws, and they are two points clear of the also unbeaten Metropolitan East, who are probably still favourites for the title as they have played one less game than Wide Bay.

Sunshine Coast are third with 24 points from also eight matches, with Metropolitan West and South Coast sharing fourth place on 20 apiece. Wide Bay delivered on what coach Paul Ash had labeled as “D-Day’’, battling out a scoreless draw with Capricornia, before downing Northern 2-0 with goals to Rachel Sparozvich and Ella Flack, then really stamping themselves as contenders with the multi-talented Morgan Reimer proving a hero by scoring the goal to get them home 1-0 over Sunshine Coast to bring down the curtain on day three.

Met East had just two games for the day, with Shannon O’Connor featuring with a double in a 3-0 dispatch of Darling Downs, but neither side was able to break through in a battle royale against Met West. Their Team Manager Norm McNamara described the Met West game as “very hard’’. “Both sides played well but they probably wanted it more – we had a few chances but couldn’t bury them,’’ McNamara said. McNamara said O’Connor “did very well’’ against the Downs, while co-captain Gemma Owens was their other goal getter. “Amber Manson also did very well this morning in the backs, Jamee Woolf was very strong today – she ran hard all day – also Nadine Magee had two super games, and Maddison ‘Dinosaur’ Johnson sat out the first game with her injury but came back and played a big part in the second,’’ he said. McNamara also said he and coach Ann-Louise Edwards are “very pleased’’ with their six wins and one draw so far and the fact that they have not conceded a goal. “But there are four hard games to go and we will have to keep working hard for the rest of it,’’ he said.

Both Met East and Wide Bay have two matches today, but while the former also have two tomorrow, the hosts will play just one game on the last day – against Met East, which could be a virtual unscheduled “grand final’’ if both sides remain undefeated up to then.

Yesterday started well for Sunshine Coast with a 1-0 win over Northern thanks to a Kari O’Brien goal, but their day got worse, playing out a scoreless draw with Met North, then being edged out by Wide Bay.

Met West’s other game resulted in a 2-0 win over Peninsula, but it took a Nyomi Devine goal to give South Coast a skinny 1-0 victory against South West and neither side could find the back of the net in South Coast’s duel with Capricornia.

Met North posted their first win of the tournament to get the ball rolling for the morning, accounting for North West 2-0, and they went on to be unbeaten for the day, as after sharing the points with Sunshine Coast, they claimed a 1-0 triumph over Darling Downs, courtesy of an Olivia Roney strike.

The Downs’ only joy for the day came against North West where Jemima Russell stood tall with a double in a 3-0 result.

Metropolitan East’s girls are the only team to have a perfect record from five matches so far at the Queensland School Sport 12 years and under State Football Championships at Martens Oval after chalking up two more wins yesterday. They are on top of the table with 20 points, but the Wide Bay girls are just two points behind after also remaining undefeated with two wins and a draw yesterday, while Sunshine Coast (17) and Capricornia (15), and Met West and South Coast, who are each on 14, are also still in contention.

Met East continued on their winning ways with Jamee Woolf snatching a double to lead them home 4-0 against North West, but Team Manager Norm McNamara said they only “got away with it in the end’’ against Met North 1-0, courtesy of a goal to co-captain Gemma Owens. “We played very well in the first half against North West but we made a few changes and struggled for a bit of cohesion but still finished four-goal winners,’’ McNamara said.

“We had a fairly lengthy break to our second game but the girls turned up and really pushed it to Met North and we got another win with another very well taken goal to Gemma just before half-time. “Unfortunately we had a serious injury and the ambulance cart came out for one of our best defenders, Maddison “Dinosaur’’ Johnson – she hyper-extended her knee and she is under treatment overnight and we’ll see how she is in the morning.’’ McNamara was also pleased for Erin Woodvine after she opened her account for Met East with a “good goal’’ against North West. “Also Nadine Magee had two solid games at sweeper – she marshalled the defence well – and Ayisha was strong in the midfield – they also really muscled up in the last game after Maddie got hurt.’’

Wide Bay also maintained their fine form, overcoming Darling Downs 4-2, drawing with Met West 2-2, then downing South West 3-0, and coach Paul Ash is delighted despite claiming they “should have’’ also beaten Met West after opening up a 2-0 lead in the first half.
“Met West scored just before half-time with a deflection off a defender which went straight in, but their second goal with six minutes to go, we didn’t mark up and they had a shot from six out, and we also missed two open goals,’’ Ash said. “But if someone said before the carnival we would have four wins and a draw from our first five games, I would have said ‘Yeh, we’ll take it’ – we’ve got no stars, they all just work hard for each other.’’ Ash said stopper Maddie Rejtano was one of their best over the three games. “Maddie has done really well, and so has Emily Drinovac in the midfield, and the other girl who has done well today is Mary-Catherine Aylward up front – she has done a lot of good running,’’ he said. Drinovac was the only player to score in all three matches, with one in each. Ash is still cautious about their title prospects, describing today as their “D-Day’’ with games against “three of the stronger teams’’ - Capricornia, Northern and Sunshine Coast.

Amber Jennings bagged a double for the Downs against the Bay but while it was not enough in that match, she struck twice more to set up a 3-1 victory over Peninsula to finish the program, and clinch their first win of the championships.

Sunshine Coast won both of their games yesterday, outgunning Capricornia 2-0 and with Emily Towle racking up a double in a 6-0 shut-out of North West. Capricornia’s other match for the day resulted in a 1-0 triumph over Northern with Megan Hellmuth the match winner.

Met West started yesterday with a scoreless draw against Northern, then after drawing with Wide Bay, they scored a crucial 2-1 victory over South Coast, who were chasing the daily treble after having pipped Met North 1-0 and also sunk Darling Downs 2-0. Ellie Papalexiou was on fire, hammering in all of South Coast’s four goals for the day after having netted one in their win over North West on Sunday.

Two other players also achieved day two doubles – Alessa Aloia who led Peninsula to a 4-0 win against North West, and Claire Urquhart who featured in Northern’s 4-1 dispatch of South West.

Metropolitan East made the best possible start to the girls division of the Queensland School Sport 12 years and under State Football Championships at Martens Oval yesterday, winning each of their three matches. They were each by just 1-0 score-lines - against South Coast, Peninsula and Sunshine Coast respectively – but a win is a win, and they head the points’ table after day one, although one other team also finished the afternoon with a perfect record so far, albeit in just two games played – host region Wide Bay.

Met East Team Manager Norm McNamara described their hat-trick of wins as each “very hard fought’’. “We scrapped all day and it wasn’t pretty, but the girls just gutsed it out,’’ McNamara said. McNamara said the goals in their first two games both came “just before half-time’’ with co-captain Gemma Owens scoring the match winner against Sunshine Coast about five minutes into the second stanza. “Most were 50-50 games, but in the last one, we probably defended a bit more than we did in the other two, and our goal-keeper Makenzie Eddington stood up very well, and we hurried in defence - that’s what saved us really,’’ he said McNamara said Eddington also did “very well’’ over the course of the day, along with their other co-captain Kate Archibald in the midfield. “But all the girls did very well together as a team and they played for each other,’’ he said. McNamara said they suffered a “few little niggling injuries but nothing we can’t handle’’ as they attempt to improve on their joint-runners-up finish with Wide Bay behind South Coast last year. They have four survivors from their 2007 team, including Owens and Archibald, while Eddington played for Metropolitan North in that tournament, and McNamara believes their experience will hold the side in good stead.

Sunshine Coast had won their first two matches, with Kari O’Brien bagging a double as they defeated Peninsula 4-0 in the carnival opener, and O’Brien also striking again in a 2-0 defeat of South West. Larissa Crummer also scored in both matches.

Ella Flack notched the only girls’ hat-trick of the day, spearheading Wide Bay to a 4-0 white-wash of North West in their series opener. The multi-talented Morgan Reimer also found the back of the net before proving the hero when she broke the deadlock against Metropolitan North midway through the second half and clinched a 1-0 victory. Wide Bay coach Paul Ash, who is in his sixth year at the helm, was lavish in praise of his side.
“The girls played very, very well - Met North didn’t even have a shot all game, which was very pleasing,’’ Ash said. “The defence was outstanding but we didn’t have one weak player through the whole park - our midfield just dominated the game and we knocked the ball around well and we could have won five or six-nil – our goal-keeper only touched the ball twice and they were through balls to her – and it is very satisfying to beat a Brisbane team any time.’’ Ash said Lexi Core was “probably our stand-out’’ with a “very dominant’’ performance in the centre-midfield, with Flack also good. “Lexi also went away last year – she is our only player from that side and she had the experience from those championships which is certainly an advantage,’’ he said. Despite their great start, Ash believes the side may struggle to match their runners-up finish of 12 months ago. “If we can get top four, I will be happy, and that would be a great achievement for this group,’’ he said.

Capricornia are also unbeaten, and they are second on the ladder after pipping Darling Downs 1-0, drawing with Metropolitan West 1-1, then defeating South West 2-0, courtesy of a Katelyn Muller double. The only other girls’ double of the day was recorded by South Coast’s Bronte Rose in their 6-1 blitz of North West.

South Coast overcame an early scare to clinch the 2008 Queensland School Sport 12 years and under Boys State Football Championships title with a last-round 4-1 victory over a valiant but outclassed Wide Bay at Martens Oval yesterday. Needing to win to claim the title, they could have pushed the panic button after the host region drew first blood via Matthew Keen in just the fourth minute. But like the good side that they are, South Coast maintained their composure and equalised five minutes later through Morgan Saunders, and proceeded to put their stamp on the match by taking a 3-1 half-time advantage, with inspirational captain Todd Norris giving them the lead and Mark Willett establishing a two-goal buffer.

They never relented, finishing with four individual scorers, with Tasar Malone putting the icing on the cake. Their coach Damien Butler was full of praise for his side. “Naturally I was a bit concerned when they (Wide Bay) scored first, but we started to play football and didn’t panic which was great,’’ Butler said. “It was a good performance to come from behind – there was a lot of pressure on because if we had not won, we could have finished second or third. “Captain Todd Norris played very well all week at centre-half but we had no-one who stood out above anyone else – it was just a great team effort today and all week – we created the chances and we scored them – the team just worked hard for each other and played to a system.’’

Despite having surged from being in a group of four teams in equal-fifth place the previous morning to hit the lead by the end of that day, with three wins and a series of other results falling their way, no-one could deny they were very worthy champions after finishing the tournament with seven wins and four draws from 11 matches. “To be unbeaten is pretty amazing – maybe it is the first time it has been done – Met East losing to Wide Bay yesterday opened the door for us, but we kept turning up, and that’s the excitement of the last day,’’ Butler said. South Coast also took home the Macgregor Cup for the “Best City Team’’ after beating Met East by a mere one point for that honour. To be crowned as outright champions was also sweet after sharing the title with Metropolitan West in 2006 and with Metropolitan East 12 months ago.

Norris and Willett were their only two players who were also part of their joint-championship winning team of last year. The pair were rewarded for their excellence with selection in the Queensland team to contest the nationals in Victoria next month, while team-mates, goal-keeper Michael Haydock and Ryan Baldwin were also included as South Coast fittingly gained the biggest state representation in the squad of 14. Sunshine Coast achieved the second largest contingent with three – Jake Wallett, Reece Dalton and Callum Phillips – while two players each from the three Metropolitan sides also made the cut, along with one from Capricornia.

In other day five matches, Met East and Met North finished as joint-runners up, just two points behind South Coast, by defeating Darling Downs 1-0 and Capricornia 2-1 respectively. Northern were just one point away in fourth position after battling out a scoreless draw with Sunshine Coast and accounting for Met West 1-0, while Sunshine Coast were hot on their heels in fifth place after signing off with a Callum Phillips goal clinching a 1-0 win over a South West side which played their hearts out.

Earlier in the morning, there was much joy among both North West and South West as they both recorded their first result of the week by playing out a fitting and highly spirited 1-1 draw with Liam Sweeney and Sam Schaefer respectively scoring their teams’ first and only goals of the tournament. North West were also very competitive in a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Peninsula in their last game later in the morning.

Capricornia and Northern were joint-winners of the Ray Leschkie Shield for the “Best Country team’’ after finishing equal-first on those points’ standings with 21 each, three clear of Darling Downs and Peninsula.

South Coast’s boys found their second wind to win each of their three day four matches in the 2008 Queensland School Sport 12 years and under State Football Championships at Martens Oval yesterday and take the lead before today’s shorter last group of matches. Metropolitan West had been listed as leaders after the third day’s play, but it was discovered that the referees had incorrectly recorded the result of their clash with Metropolitan East on Tuesday, with Met East winning 3-0, not losing as had been shown. With the recalculation, Met East were the actual leaders on 27 points, with Met North on 24, followed by Met West and Northern on 22, and Capricornia, Darling Downs, South Coast and Sunshine Coast each on 20. But South Coast did everything asked of them, with a penalty by captain Todd Norris early in the second half enough to clinch a 1-0 victory over Northern, Morgan Saunders breaking the shackles in a 6-0 shut-out of South West with Norris again among the scorers, and second half strikes by Norris and Saunders securing a 2-0 victory at the expense of Peninsula.

Many other results fell their way, to leave them surprise leaders after two days of modest returns on Monday and Tuesday, now with a tally of 32 points, two more than Met East and Met North, with Met West fourth on 28, but with just one match remaining today, they are out of contention. However, Northern, who in equal fifth place with Capricornia on 27, can still pilfer the silverware if they are successful in their two remaining games against Sunshine Coast and Met West respectively and in the unlikely event of South Coast, Met East and Met North losing the one game each which they have left against Wide Bay, Darling Downs and Capricornia respectively.

Met East played twice yesterday, drawing with Met North 1-1 in a result which set back both sides, and suffering a costly 1-0 loss to Wide Bay, while Met North scored a good 3-0 win over Darling Downs later in the afternoon. Met West’s two appearances resulted in a 1-1 draw with Darling Downs and a 2-0 dispatch of Capricornia, while Northern put their disappointment against South Coast behind them by outgunning North West 6-0 with Brendan Garner continuing his great form with a four-goal haul. Capricornia defeated North West 2-0 with another double to Ben Romyn, but they were unable to capitalise, then battling out a scoreless draw with Sunshine Coast before falling short against Met West. The Downs and Sunshine Coast kicked off the morning program with a scoreless draw, and neither side was able to do enough after that to stay in the title hunt.

South Coast manager Steve Rowell said despite the skinny margin against Northern, they
“played well for most of the game but couldn’t put it in’’. “In our second game, South West, to their credit, played really well and it was only in the last 10 minutes that we got on top, and Peninsula was a really hard game, but the boys got in with couple of scrappy goals, but there is not much between them,’’ Rowell said. Rowell attributes their position at the top to a “good team effort’’ in which Norris has led from the front. “We have no stars but the kids are playing really well – basically we have gelled well as a team - our defence has really stood out – they are a great bunch kids who have been put in positions there that they have been converted to because most of them are not defenders by trade, they are midfielders - Justin Coulson, Alastair Powell, Jordan McPherson, Ryan Baldwin and Mark Willis - it has been a big ask but they have all played tremendously for us with only three goals against us.’’

Rowell admits they were “pretty lucky’’ to re-surface to the head of affairs, but he is taking nothing for granted, especially after Wide Bay’s upset victory over Met East yesterday. “Things fell our way a bit (yesterday) but anything can happen – we had one player who missed our first five games through injury but he is now fit and well, and we will play it as a grand final,’’ he said.

Wide Bay’s giant-killing ambush of Met East was their second win for the day after they had broken a six-match losing streak with Matthew Keen hammering in two goals in a 4-0 victory over South West to start their morning, but in between the two good performances, they were given a reality check, being blown away 4-1 by Peninsula with doubles to Gieseppe Cavaliera and MacLean Simpson. Wide Bay coach Troy Robert` was pleased after they finally put it together to defeat Met East, with Keen’s first half goal enough to grab victory. “We should have been doing it for the last few days, but we have been fighting hard but losing – we have had so many losses to Brisbane teams, but some have been close ones,’’ Robert` said. “We finally found a bit of character today and a passion for football again, and tried to have a bit of fun. “All did well today but our goal-keeper Connor Skopp has been outstanding the whole tournament and he has kept us in a couple of games – he is the master of one on one’s and I don’t think anyone has beaten him in that situation.’’ Despite their disappointing previous results, Robert said many other have also performed consistently well all week including Keen and Connor Reeves up front, Josh Ihle in the back-line, and co-captains Joel Haack and Coen Sealey in the midfield.’’
Robert knows it will again be tough in their last match today with South Coast playing for the trophy.

“But we want another win to try and climb one more wrung on the ladder,’’ he said. South West have not won a match but they would certainly be up there with the best if there were rewards for effort, and their goal-keeper Zarick Janke said they have improved with every game after having had just one team training session, which did not have a 100% attendance due to the huge distances involved, before arriving in Bundaberg. He also said sweeper Jye Hartwig had “helped (him) out a lot’’, but that every player had enjoyed what for most is their first state football carnival, and that they had all learnt a lot.

Metropolitan West retained the lead in the Queensland School Sport 12 years and under Boys State Championships at Martens Oval despite suffering their first loss of the tournament and winning just one of their three day three matches yesterday. With two days to go, they are now on 25 points, just one in advance of fellow Metropolitan sides East and North after the former also had to settle for one win, one draw and one loss yesterday, but the latter was the big mover with two wins and a draw with Met West.

But the carnival is not just about results, and North West and South West are also very much winners despite each losing all of their seven matches so far. The difficulties experienced by both regions is assembling and preparing their teams are enormous, with North Western alone covering a huge area twice the size of the state of Victoria, from Mt Isa to Birdsville, to Longreach and Alpha. Due to the distance involved, they did not even have their first training session as a team until after arriving in Bundaberg last Friday, and coach Nigel Grevett said they are improving with each game. “We have had a few relative good results, and some of our players are also doing very well, like our goal-keeper Drew Conway, Gary Cutting who has been playing in defence, and Patrick Careless in the central-midfield,’’ Grevett said.

Back at the top, Met West stumbled to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Sunshine Coast to kick off yesterday’s program, but while they rebounded strongly to shut-out Met East 3-0 with Tom Webster coming to the fore with a double, they had to share the points with Met North 1-1 to finish their day’s work.

By contrast, Met East began with Nicholas Cecil and Nicholas Buckley both doubling up in a 6-0 victory over South West, but they hit a brick wall against Met West and were a little flat in a scoreless draw against Peninsula at the end of a long day. Tynan Roussety also racked up a double as Met North scored a clinical 5-0 win over North West, but they made a statement by defeating Sunshine Coast 2-1, and while they were the only side to be unbeaten for the day in three matches, they missed the chance to move to the top of the table when they relinquished a 1-0 half-time lead against Met West to have to be satisfied with the draw. Their Team Manager Peter Haslett said they had really fired up for the Sunshine Coast showdown. “It’s what we call a derby game – there’s traditional rivalry, and we scored two goals to be up 2-0 at half-time,’’ Haslett said. “There was pressure on us in the second half and we conceded a penalty about 10 minutes from the end, and then we basically had to defend - they were more at our goal than we were at theirs but we managed to hold them for a 2-1 win, and even Sunny Coast coach Chris Dunk conceded we were the better team, and we certainly were in the first half.

“Then against Met West, we have never defeated them but we have had a draw in the past, and it happened again - we got the first goal in the first half (through Michael Morrow) after their keeper dropped the ball, but in the second half, we were under the pump a bit and gave away another free kick in the penalty area which tied it up five minutes from the end. From there, basically both teams had opportunities but the defence stopped both teams scoring.’’ Haslett said all their players are doing well, with keeper and captain Andre Jannese controlling the backs and working together with Ryan Roderick, who “controls the midfield to the forwards’’.

Despite their points’ position, Haslett will wait and see how today pans out before even thinking about whether they are a chance at the title. “We are one point off the lead, and, in theory, if we win all our games, we can certainly tie up first place, but that remains to be seen - we have got Met East first-up (today) and that will be a big one, then we have got Darling Downs,’’ he said. “(Yesterday) was certainly a big improvement on (Monday) when we got bounced 4-1 by South Coast – it was 1-all at half-time and on paper, you would have to say they are a stronger side than us, but judging by the results today, they run a bit hot and cold as well, and towards the end, we lost momentum and composure.
“We also lost to Northern in our first game (on Sunday), which on our part was unexpected, but to come back this morning and having not lost a game today, we were inspired for the Sunshine Coast game and it carried through.’’

Northern are now in fourth place on 22 points after winning both of their games, with a Brendan Garner double securing a 2-0 win over Peninsula and Garner scoring two more goals, along with Ryan Lee to sentence Wide Bay to another loss, this time 4-0. South Coast dropped off the pace yesterday with two draws – 1-1 against Darling Downs and a scoreless result against Capricornia, and they currently share fifth place with three other regions – Capricornia, Darling Downs and Sunshine Coast.

Capricornia coach Steve McDowall is also “extremely pleased’’ with their performances after also disposing of Wide Bay 3-1 yesterday. “Our centre-back Alex (Beilanowski) and defender Ryan Patton are doing well, along with Hamish Maguire in the midfield, our two strikers Mitchell Hunter and captain Ben Romyn, and defender Hayden Dow,’’ McDowall said. “The players have been able to lift their game against the Metropolitan teams and have been competitive all over the park – with the boys living 500km apart, we had only had one training run before the carnival but they have gelled together in just a short period of time which is a credit to their determination to do well.’’

Peninsula achieved the biggest win of the day, white-washing South West 9-0 with Bradley Lee and MacLean Simpson cutting loose with five and four goals respectively.

Metropolitan West are the new leaders in the Queensland School Sport 12 years and under State Football Boys Championships at Martens Oval after they and South Coast emerged from day two yesterday as the only undefeated sides. Continuing on from their two wins on Sunday, Met West started yesterday with a 3-0 victory over Wide Bay, before being held to a scoreless draw by South Coast, but then proving too good for North West 4-0.

On the other hand, South Coast slipped behind on the table after winning just one of their three matches, drawing with Sunshine Coast 1-1, before again sharing the points with their Met West, but then returning to the winners’ list in emphatic fashion at the expense of Met North 4-1.

Met West head the ladder on 18 points, one clear of Met East, with South Coast third on 16, but just four points separate the top eight sides in one of the most open competitions in the tournament’s history, with Sunshine Coast on 15, and four teams on 14 – Capricornia, Darling Downs, Met North and Northern.

Met West coach Mark Mitchell was “happy with (his) boys’ performance overall’’. “We still remain undefeated - we won well against Wide Bay, also played well in our second game but couldn’t stick one away, and had a dusty start to our last game but put four away by the end of 40 minutes,’’ Mitchell said. “We played good football throughout the three matches and have shown good team spirit.’’ Met West are still yet to concede a goal in five matches, but while their goal-keeper Alex Mougenot has done everything asked of him, Mitchell said that statistic could be attributed most to their defence.

“We have defended as a unit, supported by the keeper, and our back four have been very strong – captain and sweeper Pierce Wylie, Daniel Simic, Zayd Dennis and Jamie Kelly – which is a good effort because three of them are midfielders who really don’t play that position,’’ he said. “The defence has held it nice and tight and they have played the ball forward, and the rest of the team chips in.’’

Met East defeated Northern 1-0 and Sunshine Coast 3-1 yesterday to make it four wins in a row after having started the carnival with a 1-0 loss to South Coast on Sunday, and their coach Colin Simmons said they also played “quite well’’. A first-half strike by Mitchell Austin was enough to clinch them the points against Northern, while Austin took his goal haul to five in three matches with a double to again be a match winner against Sunshine Coast. “The boys were a bit disappointed to lose first-up but they have really picked themself up and have come to the party and started to play some good football – the main thing is we don’t have any real star players but we play as a team,’’ Mitchell said. “But striker Mitchell Austin has really come into his own and has now really found his feet – he probably scored the goal of the tournament against Northern with an overhead kick, and he played well again against Sunshine Coast to get another double. “Probably Luke Pavlou, our left centre midfield, was our stand-out against Sunshine Coast – he basically had a man-marking job to do on their star player, No. 7 (Reece Dalton) who is a brilliant player - he tried to contain him and did not let him use his talent, and he did exceptionally well. “Also our right back Patrick Theodore tied up everything that came on his side – he is a very hard tackling boy and he really contained everyone that tried to get through – and our captain and central defender Zack Coulsen has also done very well.’’

In their first match of the day, captain Todd Norris snatched a 1-1 draw for South Coast from the jaws of defeat with a late strike after Sunshine Coast’s Reece Dalton had broken the dead-lock with a cracking goal midway through the second stanza. Norris was again among the scorers against Met North but Morgan Saunders was the star of that show with a double.

Sunshine Coast put their morning draw behind them with a 9-0 white-wash of North West with Thomas Hunter wreaking havoc with four goals and Callum Phillips picking up a double, but their hopes were set back with their loss to Met East.

Darling Downs, who started their series with two losses on Sunday, hit back in the best possible way yesterday with a hat-trick of wins, outgunning South West 4-0 with Ryan Knight featuring with a double, a 4-1 victory over Peninsula, and a 1-0 defeat of Wide Bay, but they have still got the job in front of them.

It was a mixed day for Capricornia, with Mitchell Hunter bagging a double in a 6-0 victory over South West and also finding the back of the net against Peninsula, but that goal was not enough as the Far North side got home 3-2 on the back of a Cameron Nucifora double.

Met North also started the day well, accounting for Peninsula 2-1 and Wide Bay 2-0, but they then met their match against South Coast, while Northern also had a mixed bag, losing to Met East but disposing of South West 2-0.

Three boys’ teams are undefeated following the opening day of the Queensland School Sport 12 years and under State Football Championships at Martens Oval yesterday after Metropolitan West, South Coast and Sunshine Coast each won both of their two matches.
But three other teams head the table with two wins and one loss each – Capricornia, Metropolitan East and Northern.

South Coast threw down the gauntlet early, edging out Met East 1-0 in the first match of the tournament, with a first-half goal to Morgan Saunders. But they cut loose against North West to romp home 8-0 with Reuben Douglas running hot with four goals and Mark Willett picking up a double. Coach Damien Butler was naturally pleased wit their promising start. “Two wins is always a good performance on the first day, and the boys are gelling pretty well – they are playing some nice football and are working hard,’’ Butler said.
“Met East was a big game – the Metropolitan areas are always strong, and the game settled the nerves and it set the standard for the carnival with the intensity like that.’’
Butler nominated team-work as the key to their results.

“(Captain) Todd Norris leads by example but they all stood up and are all gelling together well, but our keeper Michael Haydock was outstanding against Met East this morning – he nullified some great attacking raids, but he did not have much to do in the afternoon game (against North West),’’ he said. Butler is hoping to claim the title outright this year after sharing it with Met East and Met West respectively in the past two years. “You always come away hoping to be competitive but it is hard to say hard how you will go until your last game because the competition is so hard – we have got three hard games (today) – Sunshine Coast, Met West and Met North – and we will see how we are looking after that,’’ he said.

Met West started with a clinical 6-0 victory at the expense of South West with Sanjeyan Sivaananthan and Aleksa Krkeljas leading the charge with twin-doubles, and they also prevailed against Peninsula 2-0 after a good battle, but the draw gets tougher for them from now on.

Sunshine Coast’s wins were both hard fought with Jack Marriott a match winner in a 1-0 dispatch of Peninsula, and Marriott also finding the back of the net against Wide Bay, but Brandon Lee was the hero in that game, with his double clinching a 3-2 victory. Wide Bay had kicked off their campaign by outgunning North West 4-0 with Matthew Keen snaring a hat-trick and Joel Haack, who has just returned from a tour of Japan with the Queensland Primary Schools team, also getting his name on the score-card.

Capricornia also competed strongly all day long, starting with a 1-0 win over Darling Downs, then going down fighting to Met East 3-2, but bouncing back to end the day with a return to the winners’ list by overcoming Northern 2-0.

Met East got better with each match, putting their disappointment against South Coast behind them, to wear down Capricornia, then really hit their straps against North West, running out 7-0 victors with Lewis Simon making it three goals for the day with a double, and Mitchell Austin also striking twice.

A Ryan Lee strike got the ball rolling for Northern as they disposed of Met North 1-0, and he was again among the scorers as they claimed the points against Darling Downs 2-1, but they met their match against Capricornia. Meanwhile, Met North rebounded from their first-up loss to account for South West 5-0 with five individual scorers in their only other match of the day, and with five points from only two matches, they are in a bunched field in an open competition with just four points separating the top eight teams on the points’ ladder.
